Village headman resigns after son arrested with drugs

A village headman in Uttaradit’s Muang district resigned from his position on Monday, citing health problems, after his son was arrested with nearly 7,000 methamphetamine pills on Sunday.

Surachai Pinpan, headman of Ban Dong Trakhab Moo 7 of Tha Sao sub-district submitted his resignation to district chief Prasong Uraiwan with immediate effect.

Mr Prasong said the resignation seemed to be an acceptance of responsibility for the behaviour of his son. He saw it as correct as he always emphasised to village headmen and kamnan that they should resign if they could not solve problems at home.

“If village headmen or a kamnan cannot look after own families, they are unlikely to care for the problems in their area,” said Mr Prasong.

Mr Surachai’s son was found with 6,950 ya ba pills in his bedroom when the police and narcotics officers searched his house on Sunday. The were acting on information from other suspects who confessed to purchasing drugs from Mr Surachai’s son.

Mr Surachai was not involved. The son has been charged with possessing illegal drugs.
