NBTC braces for Anonymous attacks

Telecoms regulators have set up a team to deal with possible cyberattacks on the Thai government by a group of hacktivists.

Thailand Computer Emergency Response Team (ThaiCERT) earlier warned of threats that might occurred between 8.10pm and 9pm on Friday.

Op Anonymous Greece wrote on Facebook on Wednesday it was targeting the Thai government. "We can't wait! Our Weapons is ready for this Cyber Attack on Thai Gov't ! #ExpectUs #OpAnonymousGreece #AnonymousThailand #OpSingleGateway," it wrote.

Another post on Friday evening warned of an attack on TV networks. "3.5 Hours! We are coming! Thailand Lets see your TV Network!"

The 8pm TV slot on Friday is Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's weekly talk.

Thakorn Tansathit, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, said on Friday the NBTC was joining hands with the Digital Economy and Society Ministry to closely monitor the situation.

They also alerted ISPs to step up their security.
