State agencies warned against cyberattacks

The Thailand Computer Emergency Response Team (ThaiCert) has alerted state agencies about the dangers of cyberattacks after a warning about them were found online.

ThaiCert yesterday issued an alert on the possible dangers of cyberattacks and provided guidelines to government agencies on how to deal with them.

The team said it found a warning message about a cyberattack posted on the Facebook page of "Op Anonymous Greece".

The message said perpetrators targeting the Thai government's cyber operations would strike yesterday between 8:10pm and 9pm, according to ThaiCert. As of press time, there had been no attack.

State agencies were advised to create backups of their web content, including all the elements of their websites, to protect their data in case they were hit by a cyberattack or are unable to access their websites. They were urged to create a static copy of their websites to reduce traffic and workload across multiple computer resources.

Agencies were also urged to regularly monitor their websites and look into the amount of information that passes in and out of the gateway. If it is higher than normal, the website should be reset to limit the number of users.

They were also told to keep track of internet traffic and look for the attacker's IP address to block them from accessing sites.

Agencies hit by a cyberattack should seek help from ThaiCert to take down the site, ThaiCert said.

In case of a disturbed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack), where the perpetrator seeks to make a network resource unavailable to intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the internet, agencies are recommended to seek help from internet service providers.

Digital Economy and Society Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj ordered the Electronic Transactions Development Agency to devise attack prevention measures.
