PRACHIN BURI - Twenty-four workers were injured when a pickup truck loaded with watermelon pickers and another truck collided at an intersection in Ban Sang district late Monday night.

The crash at Bang Kung intersection, between kilometre makers 44 and 45 in tambon Ban Sang, occurred about 11.40pm, said Pol Capt Pannawit Boonchum, a duty officer at Ban Sang police station.

Police and rescue workers arrived to find one damaged pickup stalled in the middle of the intersection, with many injured workers and belongings scattered over the road. A second pickup, carrying sacks of chicken manure, was in a roadside ditch some 15 metres away.

Chamroen Somboon, 49, driver of the first pickup, told police he was taking 21 workers back to Chachoengsao's Sanam Chai Khet district from a watermelon farm in Saraburi.  As he approached the intersection the traffic lights were set to flashing, with no vehicles about to cross in front of him.

As he drove through the intersection another pickup suddenly emerged from the opposite direction and they crashed head-on, said Mr Chamroen.

The second truck, which was carrying three workers, was hurled into the roadside ditch by the impact.

Mr Chamroen’s vehicle spun around and came to rest in the centre of the intersection. All the workers were thrown from the vehicle.

A total 11 men and 13 women from the two vehicles were injured, five seriously, said Pol Capt Pannawit.

Mr Chamroen and driver of the second pickup, Watchara Mala, 33, were unhurt.

Police were investigating.
