DTAC, Line to be questioned about Line Mobile

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has called representatives of Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC) and Line Plus Corp to a meeting on Thursday to determine if their new Line Mobile service requires a new licence.

NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said on Tuesday the two firms were summoned to a meeting in response to a complaint about the planned launch of the Line Mobile service, which would use DTAC's TriNet network.

The NBTC was duty-bound to check if the new service would operate as a mobile virtual network  (MVNO). If so, it would need to seek a licence from the commission, he said.

If it was a supplementary service, a new licence would be unnecessary, Mr Takorn said.

The launch of the Line Mobile service will make Thailand only the second country where Line makes available its digital mobile service, featuring a low-cost SIM package through which subscribers can use its free services - messaging, calls and video chat.

LINE launched its app in Japan last year.
