WASHINGTON - A major bright spot for Thailand at Tuesday's presentation of a new report on human trafficking was the naming of Chiang Mai activist Boom Mosby as a "TIP Report Hero" in the publication
Ms Boom is a low-profile worker against child- and sex-trafficking in the North.
"The founder and director of the HUG Project is a passionate advocate for child victims of sexual abuse in Thailand and has been instrumental in the advancement of a victim-centered approach in Thai anti-trafficking efforts," the US report said.
Her Advocacy Centre for Children Thailand (ACT House) has supported more than 81 investigations and is credited with the arrest of more than 20 people connected to human trafficking.
Ms Boom's centre was the first of its kind in Asia.
In 2016, she joined the Thailand Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and has been instrumental in developing investigation techniques to spot and root out would-be trafficking via the internet.
According to the TIP report, "As the use of the internet to facilitate child trafficking grows, Ms Mosby is battling technology with technology by implementing IT forensics and other systematic strategies."
The report named 8 people as heroes, including Ms Boom, Alika Kinan, Argentina; Leonardo Sakamoto, Brazil; Vanaja Jasphine, Cameroon; Viktoria Sebhelyi, Hungary; Amina Oufroukhi, Morocco; Mahesh Bhagwat, India, and Allison Lee, Taiwan.
