Chakthip: Officer averted tragedy

A police officer who became a social media hero nearly two weeks ago for disarming an attacker and then rewarding him with a hug received an honorary certificate in recognition of his bravery and kindness yesterday by national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda.

Pol Gen Chakthip said Pol Snr Sgt Maj Anirut Malee was a model officer who used his experience and skill to defuse a situation that could easily have escalated into a tragedy.

Social media has been awash with praise for the officer since CCTV footage of the scene went viral on June 17 after a 45-year-old man who appeared to be distressed, and armed with a knife, entered Huai Khwang police station in Bangkok.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Anirut stepped forward and tried to calm the man down. The officer eventually managed to persuade him to hand over his knife, then walked over and embraced him warmly.

Pol Gen Chakthip said that when people visit police stations officers must try to find ways to help them without discriminating. He said the Royal Thai Police hold regular training sessions showing officers how to handle people.
