The vehicle U-turn bridge for the passenger terminal at Don Mueang airport will be closed for three days, from July 31 to Aug 2, to see if it improves traffic flow in the area, prior to a decision on the widening of Vibhavadi Rangsit road.
The Department of Highways says motorists going to the airport on the outbound side of Vibhavidi Rangsit road will have to use one of two other U-turn bridges - at the cargo area before the terminal, or another further up the road at the Royal Thai Air Force base.
Montri Dechasomsakul, director of Highways Office 13, said the construction of the Red Line electric train (Bang Sue - Rangsit) had meant the closure of some traffic lanes, resulting in more congestion.
This had caused traffic chaos, with cars cutting in and out of lanes for vehicles entering the bridge to Don Mueang airport.
The department planned to solve the problem by closing this bridge to traffic, for the safety of road users.
The idea would be tested by the closing of the U-turn bridge for three days, Monday July 31 to Wednesday Aug 2.
After that, the department would hold public hearings in August for residents and other people affected by the plan to widen Vibhavadi Rangsit road.
The department had already discussed the plan with the State Railway of Thailand, Don Muang Tollway Plc, Airports of Thailand, Don Muang and Vibhavadi police stations, and the Traffic Police Division, Mr Montri said.
