Killer Benz driver on bail

A Mercedes-Benz driver who killed two postgraduate students in a high-speed car crash in Ayutthaya last year has been sentenced to two and a half years in jail and banned from driving for life. He was, however, released on bail as he prepares to appeal against the verdict.

Janepob: Walks free from court

Although the Ayutthaya Provincial Court yesterday commuted the punishment from five years due to his confession and compensation he paid to the victims' relatives, his lawyer Charoen Kaeoyot said he will process the appeal within 30 days.

Janepob Veeraporn, 37, who arrived at the court with his father, refused to answer reporters' questions after the hearing.

In May, Mr Janepob gave compensation to the families of the two victims.

The amount was not revealed.

Prosecutors wanted the court to punish Mr Janepob on seven charges including careless driving causing death, speeding and drunk driving.

The court found him guilty of careless driving causing death and wrongdoings concerning violations of traffic laws, but dropped the drink driving charge due to lack of evidence.
