Army officers nationwide have been urged to send a photo of themselves in uniform to the Royal Thai Army to compete in the Smart Man "Idol" competition.

The campaign is part of the "Smart Man Smart Soldiers" policy introduced by army chief Chalermchai Sitthisad, according to an army source.

Army officers are allowed to take part in the project regardless of camp or rank.

Contestants are judged on key military attributes of strength, morality, ability, respectfulness and technological know-how -- SMART for short.

The source said the contestants must write short statements detailing how those features apply to them and how they fall in line with the "Smart Man Smart Soldier" concept. Statements and photos must be sent to the organisers at https://www.facebook.com/SmartManSmartSoldier/.

The selected candidates will join a special programme under the Smart Man "Idol" banner soon, according to the source.
