UBON RATCHATHANI - Heavy overnight rain caused flooding up to 2 metres deep in Si Muang Mai, Khong Chiam and Nam Yuen districts on Wednesday morning, with many villages isolated and dependant on boats.
Prasit Thongkham, president of the Nong Saeng Yai tambon administration organisation, said floodwaters had isolated Ban Dong Mafai, Ban Dong Bak, Ban Nong Saeng Noi and Ban Kud Yakham villages of tambon Nong Saeng Yai in Khong Chiam district.
A road leading to Ban Don Mafai was about 2 metres under water for a distance of about 800 metres and boats were being used to transport commuters and patients who needed to see doctors.
Vast areas of paddy, cassava and rubber fields were inundated. Runoff had poured into Ban Sri Boonruang village in tambon Nuam Yuen of Nam Yuen district. Local officials had yet to survey the damage.
The heavy rain was brought by depression Sonca, which covered the Northeast on Wednesday. The Meteorological Department said it was moving slowly westerward towards the North and would bring more heavy rain to the North, Northeast, Central Plain and the East until Friday.
The rain and associated runoff are also raising the level of the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom province, where tributaries are overflowing their banks and flooding about 1,000 rai of low-lying paddy fields.
