Trailer truck rams into roadside food shop, driver injured

LAMPANG -- A articulated lorry loaded with containers rammed into a food shop on Phahon Yothin highway in Thoen district early on Sunday after the driver - who was seriously injured - lost control of the vehicle, police said.

Pol Capt Phakphum Wongchai, a Thoeng police duty officer, said the accident occurred at about 8am when the driver of the lorry, which was heading for Lampang from Tak, lost control of the vehicle between kilometre markers 615-616 on Phahon Yothin highway near Ban Nong Chiang Ran in tambon Lam Raet.

The lorry swerved across the median strip to the other side of the highway.

The driver, Somphot Baokhamphui, 29, managed to jump out of the vehicle through the left passenger door while the vehicle was still in motion. He suffered multiple injuries all over his body.

The driverless 18-wheeler then rammed into a food shop before grinding to a halt.  The shop was badly damaged, but nobody was hurt as there were no customers in it at the time.

Police were investigating. It was initially believed the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.
