SAKON NAKHON: Police have found nearly one tonne of marijuana in a van reportedly owned by a man from Pattani and left abandoned in Muang district.

Officers went to inspect the black Hyundai H1 with Bangkok licence plates in a deserted area of Ban Don Moo in tambon Ngiew Don on Friday night after residents said it had been parked there for two days. Police towed it to the Muang Sakon Nakhon police station.

A mechanic was called to open the vehicle on Saturday morning and police found 980 packs of compressed marijuana weighing one kilogramme each.

Documents in the van showed that it belonged to Samart Toburi, 48, of Khok Pho district in the southern province of Pattani. Police plan to call him in for questioning.
