Prem backs govt's record in office

Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda yesterday expressed support for the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and insisted it has helped improve people's lives.

Gen Prem made his remarks when Gen Prayut led cabinet ministers and chiefs of the armed forces and the police in wishing him best wishes ahead of his 97th birthday tomorrow.

"I think Thai people understand what Tu [Gen Prayut's nickname] does. I think Thais understand the government is working to save people from poverty and give them self-sufficiency. They will understand that you are not doing it for your own honour or reputation," Gen Prem said at his Si Sao Thewes residence in Bangkok.

Gen Prem also referred to his friendships with Gen Prayut and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, saying these bonds would ensure the smooth working of the government.

"I would like Tu to remain determined in working for the nation. Do not get an unnecessary headache over people's remarks," the Privy Council president said.

"The National Council for Peace and Order's dedication to the country speaks for itself. Since the NCPO stepped in to run the country, it's been a tiring and trying time with complications and headaches," Gen Prem said.

Gen Prayut should remain as steadfast as prime minister as he was when he was army chief. If he is able to do that, he will have fewer headaches to worry about, Gen Prem added.

Gen Prayut spent five minutes extending his best wishes to Gen Prem. He wished Gen Prem good health and said he was a good example of love for the nation.

The prime minister said the government was bound by its pledge to build a strong and progressive nation.

"We must not let ourselves be divided any longer," he said, adding the goal is to create a democracy acceptable overseas which was also practical and sustainable, buoyed by the principles of good governance.
