Eight cows were killed when they ran onto a highway and were hit by a public van in Uthai Thani’s Muang district early on Monday morning. One passenger injured.

Emergency units were called to the accident on the southbound side of Highway 333 around 3am.

They found two dead cows trapped underneath the van, and six more scattered on the road.

The vehicle's front end was damage and the front-seat passenger, Banjerd Ruengkasetkit, injured. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

Van driver Suchart Kumpaphan was at the scene. He told the police he just picked up passengers from the provincial bus terminal and was taking them to Bangkok.

He had travelled about three kilometres when a herd of cows ran across the road immediately in front of him. He was unable to brake in time or avoid hitting them.

Police investigators found that the cows' pen had been flooded and so the owner had taken them to graze and rest in pasture along the side of the highway. For some reason they had run up onto the road.

Police were investigating.
