KHON KAEN - One side of local road undermined by water during days of heavy rain last month has collapsed, leaving a single cracked and dangerous lane running alongside a five-metre drop, and the local community want to know why their requests it be repaired go unheeded.

Residents of Ban Srisomboon in tambon Nong Ko of Kranuan district on Friday complained to local media about the collapsed section of road. They said an entire traffic lane had given way, and the single remaining lane was unsafe to use.

They had complained to local authorities, but their voices went unheard. No officials bothered to help them and no workmen were sent to make repairs.

About 100 residents on Friday led local reporters to see the damaged road, the main link between Kranuan district in Khon Kaen and Huai Mek and Nong Kung Si districts of Kalasin.

Prasit Khanma, head of Ban Sri Somboon village, said days of heavy rain pounded the community last month, and washed away the soil underneath the road. One lane had collapsed. Residents dared not use the lane that remained standing as it had cracks running along at least 50 metres of its length.

“We put up warning signs on the road, advising motorists to take extra caution. Motorists should avoid using this route at all, for their own safety. Most people here dare not use this road for fear it might further collapse,’’ the village headman said.

He had earlier reported the collapsed road section to Kranuan district office and Nong Ko tambon administration organisation (TAO).

The TAO later notified him the village had been allocated 700,000 baht for the repairs, but there was still no sign of the money.

He said people in the village and nearby areas needed that road repaired urgently so they could continue with their normal lives. But so far, nothing had been done.
