The southern region should prepare for heavy rain and flash floods over the weekend and into next week, with only Chumphon province likely to be spared, the Meteorological Department warned on Friday.

Turbulent weather leading to heavy rain and sudden flooding was likely, with the rain not easing until after Tuesday. Rough seas were expected on both southern coastlines.

Rain has covered the southern region this week and Satun has been hardest hit with rising floodwaters in seven districts, including Satun municipality.

Sunaree Boonchub, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office chief, said the situation was worsened by runoff from the mountain.

In Muang district, 23 schools, a post office and a childcare centre closed on Friday due to floods, the province said.

Parts of the northern and northeastern regions of the country also had rain on Friday, and a landslide blocked Road 11, one of the main highways linking the central and northern regions, in Pichai district in Uttardit.

The weather office said Bangkok should brace for rain, heavy in some districts, into Saturday.

Rain fell on several districts of the capital on Friday, with Phaya Thai recording the most at 100 millimetres, followed by Bang Sue and Ratchathewi, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
