Late King mourners to get free train rides

Train commuters will be given free rides on the Airport Rail Link from Oct 25 to 27 to facilitate mourners' travel during the royal cremation ceremonies for the late King Rama IX.

The 28-km rail line, linking Phaya Thai station and Suvarnabhumi Airport, currently serves people travelling between central Bangkok and its eastern suburbs. The line will be vital for people flocking across the city to Sanam Luang, where the ceremonies will be held.

Passengers will not be only given free rides, but on Oct 26, the cremation day, service hours for the line will be extended to 2am the following day, Wisut Chanmani, acting managing director of SRT Electric Train Co, which runs the Airport Rail Link, said.

To ensure people travel to and from important venues smoothly, trains will leave stations every 10 minutes, he said.

Additional trains will be on standby to deal with possible overcrowding, Mr Wisut added.
