EU warns Thailand on N.Korea sanctions

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon insisted Thailand has complied with United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding sanctions on North Korea, but it has not yet informed the UN of its actions.

The remark came after the EU warned that Thailand was seen as a risk for evading sanctions on North Korea. It has instructed European embassies in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia to be on the lookout for sanctions-breakers.

On Monday, the EU blacklisted the North Korean army, meaning anything it owns in Europe will be seized and frozen. It banned all investment in North Korea and the export of oil.

The deputy prime minister said trade between Thailand and North Korea has fallen to a very low level.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Busadee Santipitaks said Thailand has not received any official warning from the EU.

Thailand's bilateral trade with North Korea fell to only US$1.5 million (50 million baht) for the first half of this year compared to $19 million in the same period last year.

Trade between the two countries stood at $82 million in 2015 and $50 million last year.
