Pol Lt Pariyapol Saensen, the duty officer at Khlong Luang police station, said a team of police and rescuers of the Ruam Katanyoo Foundation rushed to the scene on being informed of the accident about 2.30am on Monday.

The found a Khon Kaen-registed Honda car lying upside down on the Phahon Yothin highway in front of  the Finance Ministry's Royal Mint, below the tollway.

The rescuers used their equipment to force it open and pulled out the body of the dead driver, a woman.  From her driver's licence she was identified as Prasniya Srisithisakul, 39, of Muang district of Khon Kaen province.

From a preliminary investigation, it was believed the woman was driving from Bangok on the Din Daeng - Don Muang tollway heading for Khlong Luang district. At the end of the tollway the car hit one of the concrete blocks closing it to traffic. The vehicle then plunged off the tollway onto the Phahon Yothin highway below.

Police believed the woman was not familiar with the route and did not notice the exit ramp to Khlong Luang district.

Her body was sent to Thammasat Hospital for examination.
