Lost Russian found dead off Phuket

PHUKET – The body of a Russian man who walked into the sea and disappeared after a fight with his girlfriend was pulled out of the water about a kilometre offshore Friday.

The Phuket-area rescue centre was alerted by a fishing boat that a body was floating about one kilometre off Trai Trang beach.

It took about 20 minutes for rescue workers from Kusoldharm Phuket foundation to retrieve the corpse, still wearing a black jacket and dark-green pants, motorcycle gloves and black high-top shoes. The body had no wounds or sign of injury.

He was later identified as Pavel Mironov, 27, by his wife Tsyrenova Mironov, 25. Mironov disappeared Wednesday night on Kalim beach in Katu district.

The newlywed couple came for a honeymoon in Phuket, but they got into argument. Mrs Mironov thought her husband was just walking into the surf, but he either walked in too far or decided to swim while fully dressed.

Police speculated earlier that alcohol may have been involved.
