Sky lanterns banned near city airports

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra has issued an order prohibiting the sale and launching of fire lanterns near Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports and cultural sites within the city on Loy Krathong night for safety reasons.

The sale and floating of lanterns is prohibited from 6pm on Thursday to 5am on Friday in areas near the Grand Palnce, historical sites, government installations and high-rise buildings.

For the safety of aicraft landing and taking off, the release of lanterns is also prohibited in Don Muang, Bang Khen, Bang Sue, Lat Phrao, Dusit, Phayathai and Chatuchak around Don Mueang airport; and in Prawet, Nong Chok, Suan Luang, Min Buri, Khlong Samwa and Lat Krabang districts around Suvarnabhumi airport during the same period.

Violators are liable to a maximum three months in jail and/or a fine of 6,000 baht.
