Sak Chaiyapong, 44, of Nonthaburi's Bang Bua Thong district, showed up at Saraburi's Muang police station at about 10.30pm on Wednesday to hand a bag containing US banknotes worth almost 2 million baht to Pol Lt Seksan Udomsap, a police on duty.

The 44-year-old taxi driver told the officer that the money belonged to one of his three Indonesian passengers who left it on the back seat.

He said he took the three Indonesians from Suvarnabhumi aiport to Charoen Krung Soi 30 in Bangkok Wednesday night.  Mr Sak didn't notice the bag was left behind.

While he was driving another passenger to Chaiyaphum, he was contacted by the airport's passenger-service section that a foreign passenger left his bag in his taxi. He checked and found the bag on the back seat. He returned it to police before taking his awaiting passenger to Chaiyaphum.

Mr Iwan Nuhsaleh, 49, an Indonesian jewellery trader, arrived at the Saraburi police station at 2.30am on Thursday to claim his money. He said he planned to buy gems in Chanthaburi for sale. When he arrived at his accommodations, he could not find his bag. He immediately contacted the airport.

He gave a cash reward of 5,000 baht to the driver through police.
