TPL referees suspended for mistake

Offside ruling cost Chonburi FC win and chance for title

Two referees involved in a controversial offside ruling during a crucial Premier League match on Oct 29 have been suspended by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), one for 18 months and the other for two years.

FAT chief referee Chinnasen Thongkomol said referee Chaiya Mahaprab was banned for 18 months and assistant referee Suchart Fangmala for two years for their performance in the match between Chonburi Football Club and Chainat Hornbills Football Club on Oct 29.

Chonburi FC was hoping for the premiership title. During the match, a header by Chonburi's Anderson Dos Santos went into the Chainat net, but Suchart ruled it offside. Chaiya confirmed the decision and the match ended with a 1-1 draw.

Chinnasen said replays did not confirm the player was offside. The ban on the two referees covered both local and international matches.

The Thailand Premier League season concluded last Sunday with Chonburi FC finishing in second position with 76 points and Buriram United holding the title for the third time with 79 points.
