Police identify body in suitcase in Kanchanaburi river

Police have identified the dead woman found stuffed in a suitcase floating in the Mae Klong River in Kanchanaburi on Nov 6, and said she was last seen alive with a male foreigner leaving Bangkok in a taxi for Kanchanaburi.

A capture from a CCTV camera inside Nana Entertainment Plaza shows Laxami Manochat leaving with the man who last saw her alive as they leave the Bangkok bar complex just before midnight Nov 1.

The body, found dressed in a black T-shirt, shorts and brown high-heeled shoes, was found stuffed in a red travel bag floating on the river behind the Khao Noi Khao tambon administration organisation office in Tha Muang district.

It took police 10 days to identify the woman as Laxami Manochat, 31, a native of Si Sa Ket province. Her identify was confirmed by a younger sister and her friend, who confirmed the diamond set in an eye tooth,  navel piercing and the clothing.

A photo of a closed-circuit television feed inside Nana Entertainment Plaza shows Laxami Manochat leaving with the man who last saw her alive in Bangkok just before midnight Nov 1.

The woman had worked at a bar the Nana Entertainment Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 4. Images from security cameras inside the bar complex shows her leaving  with a male foreigner, who Nana sources claimed was American, about 11pm on Nov 1, getting in a taxi heading to Kanchanaburi.

The victim's mother, Sad Manochat, 60, of tambon Phrai of Khun Harn district in Si Sa Ket, said her last contact with Luxami was on Nov 1, when her daughter called and promised to send money on Nov 12. She had not heard from Luxami again.

Mrs Sad said Luxami had earlier stayed in the United States with her former husband. She later returned to Thailand and worked to support the family. She had a daughter who was staying  with Mrs Sad.

Pol Maj Gen Kamolsanti Klanbut, chief of Kanchanaburi police, said investigators would try to track down the foreigner who had accompanied her.

Thai media reported that the taxi driver who took the couple to Kanchanaburi had already met with police and given them information.
