Flooding cuts 100 roads in Pathiu

Forest runoff, triggered by days of heavy downpours, has hit several communities in Pathiu district of Chumphon, cutting off more than 100 transport routes and damaging vast agricultural areas.

Pathiu district chief  Nakrob na Thalong said on Tuesday that rain ravaged the district from Nov 14-16, triggering flooding affecting several villages. Many houses and farmland have been inundated.

A survey showed that 120 transport routes were damaged, including 65 routes in tambon Chumkho, 25 in tambon Khao Chaiyarat, and 30 other routes in tambon Don Yang.   Several bridges and water pipes were also damaged, said the district chief.

Local administrative bodies on Tuesday deployed heavy machinery to repair damaged roads to ease hardship on locals.  In some badly damaged routes, local residents were advised to use alternative routes.

Workers raced to repair a road link in tambon Chumkho, as it is a major carrier of goods and people for 14 villages.

The district chief said damage has yet to be estimated as the district was awaiting survey results from local leaders in all affected communities.
