Khanchit moved to Bang Khwang

Former Democrat MP Khanchit Thapsuwan, sentenced to death for the 2011 murder of a rival politician, has been moved from Samut Sakhon provincial prison to the high-security Bang Khwang Central Prison in Nonthaburi pending appeal and another bail request.

The Samut Sakhon prison was required to transfer Kanchit to the Bang Khwang facility, as it could only detain prisoners sentenced to terms of 15 years or fewer.

Khanchit was taken to Bang Khwang Tuesday morning and will reside in Zone 2, which houses about 800 inmates on death row, including Wanchai Sangkhao, the 22-year-old railway sleeper-car employee found guilty of the murder and rape of a young girl in July.

The Samut Sakhon provincial court last week found the former MP for Samut Sakhon guilty of fatally shooting Udon Kraiwatnussorn, former president of the provincial administration organization at a PTT petrol station in tambon Tha Sai of Muang district, on Dec 25, 2011. The court handed down the death penalty for him and rejected his bail request.

Surin Permpoon, Kanchit's former assistant, said the ex-MP's family would submit another bail application for his release and take the case to the Appeal Court.
