First 'Mae Kaning' appears

CHIANG MAI - The first frost appeared early this morning on Doi Intanon in Chiang Mai where the temperature dropped to two degrees Celsius.

Early-rising tourists took pictures of Mae Kaning covering a long stretch of grass along the road near a tourist service centre in Chom Thong district.

Pornthep Charoensuebkul, chief of the Doi Intanon National Park, said 55,563 tourists visited the 482-square-kilometre park in October, up 20% from the same month last year. Of the total visitors last month, 4,973 were foreigners.

This month and next, more tourists are expected since most rooms and tent campsites have been booked, especially during weekends and holidays, he said.

At 2,565 metres above sea level, Doi Intanon is the highest mountain in Thailand. It is part of the Himalayas stretching from Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar.
