Pongpat, 5 officers relieved of duty

Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) commander Pongpat Chayaphan and five other police officers on Sunday were relieved of duty and dismissed from their positions pending investigations.

National police chief Pol Gen Somyot Pumpanmuang signed an order on Sunday to move them out of their posts immediately.

The action was taken against Pol Lt Gen Pongpat, his deputy Pol Maj Gen Kowit Wongrungroj, Marine Police chief Pol Maj Gen Boonsueb Praitheua, Pol Col Wuthichart Luansukhan of the Consumer Protection Police Division, Pol Sr Sgt Maj Surasak Channgao and Pol Sr Sgt Maj Chatrin Laothong.

Samut Sakhon immigration chief Pol Col Kowit Muangnual, who also has been arrested and charged, was not in the order.

The officers have a chance to appeal the order to the Police Commission in 30 days and to the Central Administration Court in 90 days, the order said.

A police source said a panel will be set up on Monday to probe severe disciplinary action against the six officers.

Three civilians have been charged in connection with the police officers. Two of them are on the run and the third has been arrested.

Police will take them to the Criminal Court on Monday to seek approval for detention.
