Khon Kaen police pay for protest

Five top police officers in Khon Kaen have been transferred to the South following a three-finger protest staged by students in the northeastern province last Wednesday.

Pol Lt Gen Boonlert Jaipradit, Provincial Police Region 4 commissioner, signed the order to transfer Pol Capt Supakorn Kamsingnok, acting commander; Pol Capt Pongrit Kongsirisombat, investigation superindendent; Pol Lt Col Anusak Sakdawatcharanon, deputy crime suppression superindendent; Pol Maj Jeerattikul Jaraskamolpong, crime suppression inspector; and Pol Maj Chartchai Timnikul, investigation inspector, effective on Sunday.

Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd, a Prime Minister's Office deputy spokesman, declined to comment on the transfers on Monday, saying they were at the discretion of the police chief and the government would not intervene.

Five Khon Kaen University students wearing "No coup" T-shirts walked to the stage where Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was giving a speech on Nov 19 and raised three fingers above their heads, an anti-authoritarian sign borrowed from the Hunger Games films.

Provincial Police Region 4 covers 12 upper northeastern provinces: Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Phanom, Bung Kan, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Nong Kai, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Loei.
