Chumphon storm spawns waterspout

CHUMPHON — A waterspout whipped up the coast off this southern province on Tuesday as the weather bureau advised travellers to Koh Tao to check conditions in the Gulf of Thailand.

A waterspout is captured off Haad Sairee in Chumphon province by Kulwadee Norphan by her mobile phone.

The waterspout swirled for 15 minutes about two kilometres off Haad Sairee in Muang district before petering out, according to Kulwadee Norphan, who captured it on her mobile phone and posted it to the "Chumphon Alert" Facebook page. There were no reports of injuries.

Meanwhile, the marine office in Chumphon advised tourists to monitor weather conditions before ferrying to tourist islands, including Koh Tao in Surat Thani province. Chumphon is a gateway to Koh Tao due its closer proximity to mainland Surat Thani.

Office chief LCdr Chaisiri Khundam said rough seas were possible due to the monsoon season in the gulf.

The Meteorological Department forecast scattered rain over the next seven days, with swells as tall as two metres.
