Greek diplomat dies in train fall

A Greek diplomat was killed when she fell from a moving train and her head was crushed on a rail track in Sai Yok district of Kanchanaburi province on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The diplomat was later identified as Aristea Liapi, 30, a secretary at the Greek embassy in Bangkok.

Pol Lt Kasant Para, an investigator at Sai Yok district police station, said the incident occurred at about 1.05pm at a train stop at kilometre marker 173/6 in tambon Lumsum of Sai Yok district. Train No.257 from Thon Buri was heading for Nam Tok railway station in Sai Yok district at the time and had stopped for about 20 minutes.

Eyewitnesses told police that when the train began to move again, Liapi took a step out and the strap of a bag she was carrying got entangled with the knob of the train door, causing her to lose the balance and fall. Her head was crushed by the moving train. 

Her husband, Andreas Liapi, who was with her on a sightseeing trip called the Greek embassy in Bangkok after the incident.

Police are still looking into the accident before filing an official report.
