Police arrest US man on rape charges

Police have arrested a 47-year-old American in Samut Prakan on charges of rape and assault, crimes he allegedly committed in the United States and Thailand.

Thomas Andrew Erickson was apprehended on Wednesday night at Moo Ban Klang Muang in Samut Prakan's Muang district on arrest warrants issued by Denton County Court and Harris County in Texas and by the Criminal Court in Thailand.

Erickson: Wanted by US and Thai police

Police said they seized two fake passports used by Mr Erickson to conceal his real identity.

One of the passports identified him as a British citizen with the name Barry Stuart Wolfenden, while the other stated he was Andrew Gillis Maclean, an American national.

Police said they also seized two international driver's permits with the same two names.

Other items seized during his arrest included a black Acer laptop, a Kasikornbank book, a debit card and credit cards.

Police said the arrest was carried out under the request of US authorities filed on Sept 15.

They had information that the suspect who had escaped arrest at home was hiding out in Thailand.

His passport has been revoked by the State Department.

Authorities later found he allegedly also attacked and sexually assaulted a female jewellery shop employee in Bangkok's Bang Rak district and fled.

Hua Mak Police and the Criminal Court later issued an arrest warrant for him in 2011 for sexual assault and causing serious injury to the victim.

Over the past few years, Mr Erickson used forged passports to work as a language teacher at Benjamarachutit and Srithammarat Suksa schools in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

He later worked as a teacher at Udomsuksa Rangsit, Sarasas Witaed Romklao and Saint Joseph's Bangna schools in Bangkok.
