Student slain, friend 'critical' in Pattani

One high school student was killed and a second remains in critical condition in hospital after they were attacked by gunmen while riding home on a motorcycle in Pattani on Thursday evening.

Sutthipong Thongsuwan, 17, son of local policeman Pol Snr Sgt Maj Suriyan Thongsuwan, died at Pattani Hospital late Thursday night.

His friend Preechawat Waewchanchayakorn, 17,  remains in a criticial condition in Yala Regional Hospital. Both were students in Matthayom Suka 5 (Grade 11) at Dechapattanayanukul School in Pattani.

They were attacked by two men on a motorcycle while riding a motorcycle home after school on Road 42 in tambon Tanyongdalor in Yaring district of Pattani on Thursday evening.

Police suspected insurgents were respnsible for the murder, which followed the provincial court’s ruling on Thursday sentencing five southern insurgents to death for shooting dead four soldiers and seriously wounding two others in an attack in July 2012.

In Sai Buri district, police were investigating the fatal shooting of an unknown man in tambon Kadunong about 7.30am on Friday.

In Thung Yang Daeng district, a villager was gunned down in front of his house late Thursday night. The victim, identified as Mamuelee Wama, 57, was attacked by three men travelling on two motorcycles. The attackers parked in front of the house and opened fire at him, police said.
