Netizens give PM a new look

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha may be a lot of things but one thing he definitely is not is a man who is easy to please.

Three days after he commented he wanted to spice up his weekly TV programme on Friday so that more people would watch it, the internet came alive with hundreds of suggested backdrops on the Facebook page "Change the background for the Dear Leader".

But the testy general has turned them all down, calling them "pathetic".

Don't expect to see this background on Friday night.

Returning to Bangkok on Friday after an official trip to Vietnam, Gen Prayut told reporters that his programme this week was recorded on Tuesday and one of the changes was that he was sitting.

"It doesn't matter whether people like me. What matters is they listen to what I have to say. Has anyone ever talked to them the way I do? That's why it takes so long. When it's long, they get bored and won't listen. So what do they want?

"I haven't been angry for three days. I'm just tired," he said.

"What more do you want from me? I had several meetings and didn't sleep all night. When I'm back, instead of asking whether the prime minister is tired or how I am, you [reporters] want to know when an election will be held, what's the progress of the constitution?"

Asked whether he had seen the new "backgrounds" suggested for his TV programme (one featured a Hunger Games motif), he said he had and that all of them were pathetic.
