Pol Snr Sgt Maj Nulom Atma and Pol Snr Sgt Maj Mongkhon Thothong have been sentenced by the Supreme Court to 20 years in jail and fined 40,000 baht each for raping a 16-year-old in 2007.

The two claimed the girl's mother Orawan Waeokhum gave false information in her complaint to the police and lied in court about the rape case. Napha Atma and Thaphatnat Thothong are acting on their husbands' behalf in suing Ms Orawan, who the two men claimed made the rape accusation against them arising from a personal conflict, stemming from their arrest of the woman on a drug charge.

The Criminal Court yesterday accepted their petition for consideration and set Feb 16 next year for the first hearing. The legal conflicts between Pol Snr Sgt Maj Nulom and Pol Snr Sgt Maj Mongkhon and Ms Orawan could be traced back to the night of Jan 14 in 2007, when the woman's daughter was detained at the Phetkasem police station to which the two officers were attached.

On Jan 26, Ms Orawan complained to the city police's Children and Women Protection sub-division, accusing Pol Snr Sgt Maj Nulom and Pol Snr Sgt Maj Mongkhon of raping her daughter.

The girl gave an account in support of her mother's complaint to the police. This prompted the two men to sue the girl in the Criminal Court for making false accusations against them. The court in December last year found the girl guilty as accused by the police and sentenced her to nine months in jail. The officers then had their wives ask the Criminal Court in February this year for a retrial of the rape case but their request was rejected by both the primary court and the Appeal Court.
