Govt donates B3.2m to Gaza

Thailand's ambassador to Jordan last month led a delegation to make a US$100,000 (3.2 million baht) donation on behalf of the government to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

The money is to help victims of heavy fighting on the Gaza Strip earlier this year that caused more than 2,000 deaths.

PRCS president Younis Al-Khatib received the donation from Piriya Khempon during the delegation's visit to Ramallah in the central West Bank. Mr Piriya told Mr Al-Khatib that Thailand had monitored the Gaza situation closely and was concerned about the impact of fighting on humanitarian work in affected areas.

The government made the donation to help fund relief operations on the Gaza Strip. It earlier made a US$100,000 donation to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinians, Mr Piriya told Mr Al-Khatib.

PRCS thanked the Thai government for the donation and pledged to spend the money on food, medicine, medical equipment and temporary shelters for the people of Gaza. Schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure damaged during the fighting are also in need of repair, the society said.

The Thai delegation also visited Majdi Al-Khaldi, diplomatic adviser to the President of Palestine, and Mazen Shamiyah, assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Palestine for Asia, Africa, and Australia.

The Palestinian side was enthusiastic about strengthening relations with Thailand and promoting cooperation in various fields. Mr Piriya reaffirmed Thailand's support of Palestinian rights and urged all parties involved in the fighting to return to the negotiating table and look for a peaceful solution to the crisis in the Middle East.
