AirAsia launches courier service

No-frills carrier AirAsia has expanded its Redbox express courier service to include Thailand.

Establishment of Redbox by AirAsia (Thailand) comes amid moves by the Malaysia-based airline to tap its extensive route network spanning 88 destinations in 22 countries and territories.

The company is focusing on Thai SMEs and e-commerce businesses for its service.

It also wants to provide a quick, economical and convenient air parcel service to foreigners working in Thailand and Thais living abroad, said Supoj Walee-itikun, general manager of Redbox by AirAsia (Thailand).

He said Redbox rates were 50% cheaper than those of other existing courier services.

Besides Thailand, service now covers Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Nepal. Plans are afoot for expansion into Australia, Japan, China and Hong Kong.

AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes said Redbox would contribute to the enhancement of the airline's ancillary revenue.

Ancillary revenue from services such as baggage charges and in-flight food and beverage sales now account for 20% of group revenue, he said.

Redbox has more than 300 outlets and kiosks. Customers may also call to arrange for pickup of their consignments.

Mr Supoj said services equalled those of other couriers such as door-to-door delivery, tracking and insurance.
