Train kills 'phone' woman

A 51-year-old woman died after being hit by a tourist train in Kanchanaburi's Tha Maka district yesterday morning.

Witnesses told police they saw the woman, who was later identified as Phakjira Ngamsiriworakul, talking on a mobile phone while crossing the rail tracks in tambon Tha Rua Phra Thaen.

She was hit by the No.909 tourist train from Hua Lamphong terminal in Bangkok bound for the Sai Yok waterfall in Kanchanaburi.

Pol Lt Sophon Klanpholrang, the police investigator in charge of the case, said he was alerted to the incident about 9.30am yesterday.

Police discovered the body of the victim along with a piece of paper with "Loy Ngamsiriworakul, Born 1932, died on Dec 2, 2014" written on it and a set of car keys.

Police suspect Loy may be the woman's father and that she had come to the area to shop for food for Loy's funeral. A fresh market is adjacent to where the body was found.

Police believe the woman drove to the area as they found her pickup truck parked about 200 metres from where the body was found.

Inside the vehicle, officers found the victim's ID card. Phakjira was from Ban Pong district in neighbouring Ratchaburi province.

Police contacted her family and asked them to identify the body.

Police said there are a number of shops along the tracks which probably obscured the view of the oncoming train.

Also, the fact that she was seen talking on the phone indicates that she might have been distracted and did not notice the train, Pol Lt Sophon said.
