Fatal crash in Kanchanaburi

A pickup truck carrying hospital staff from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi skidded and overturned on a steep mountain slope in Sangkhla Buri district, killing one woman and injuring nine other people, including two boys.

The accident occurred on Khao Maidaeng in tambon Laiwor, which is located inside the Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, around 6pm Friday.

Pol Lt Col Noppadol Srisuksong of the Sangkhla Buri police station said responding officers found a Toyota pickup overturned at the scene and one woman dead.

The dead victim, identified later as Somkhid Anthasen, 46, sustained serious head injuries. The injured included six women, one man and two boys. Three of them were seriously injured. Local forest conservationists and soldiers rushed to the scene to help move the victims to hospitals.

The pickup truck had been carrying 10 staff members and children of state-run Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital in Bangkok to deliver goods to rural children in Sangkhla Buri. A police investigation found that it skidded off a steep slope of Khao Maidaeng and overturned. Driver Sirichai Rakwang was not among the injured.
