Phuket store shelves collapse, 2 hurt

PHUKET — A woman and her young daughter were taken to hospital after being injured when high shelves collapsed at the Homeworks Phuket store on Sunday.

Emergency crews clear wreckage after shelves stacked with paint tins collapsed at Homeworks Phuket.

Phuket residents Phatcharee Boontaley, 35, and her daughter Pitchaya Saekin, 11, are being treated at Bangkok Phuket Hospital, while the girl's father Paiboon Saekin was also hurt when a fan tipped over and brought down ceiling-high shelves containing hundreds of paint tins at 4.20pm.

The store has been closed temporarily as emergency crews work to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the collapse. The store's floor was covered in paint as dozens of tins burst open, causing a pungent smell that affected clean-up operations.

Central Group will cover all medical expenses of the injured, a spokesperson for the retailer said.

Following the incident, staff at all properties operated by Central Group have been ordered to thoroughly check the safety of shelves to avoid any similar incidents.

The Central spokesperson said the incident was unprecedented. Nothing like this had ever happened at any property operated by the Central Group.
