Bicycle path coming to Chao Phraya River

The government is working toward building a bicycle path along the Chao Phraya River after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha suggested the idea to relieve traffic congestion and encourage people to exercise, deputy government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said.

The Interior Ministry is studying the cycling path and has indicated the path may run 20km along the river, Maj Gen Sansern said. The government hopes to provide space along the country's main river for family activities and recreation.

"The beginning and end of the route are still under the study, as well as the budget," he said on Tuesday.

Gen Prayut earlier declared cycling an urgent national priority, calling for an increase in bicycle lanes and improvements to existing ones.

"The premier said the Chao Phraya landscape should be re-organised, allowing people to use areas for more activities, including exercise," Maj Gen Sansern said.
