Man arrested for chopping up girlfriend

Police on Sunday night arrested a man accused of killing and dismembering his former girlfriend oin a jealous rage, after a three-day manhunt.

Although the man, a vendor, was known only by his nickname, "Am", his photo from a security camera and blood stains were enough to pursue legal action, said Provincial Police Region 1 commander Pol Lt Gen Amnuay Nimmano, who obtained a warrant from the Criminal Court on Sunday.

Around 8pm Sunday, police arrested the man in Bangkok’s Dao Kanong area and took him to Samut Prakan police station for questioning.

Their recent search of the suspect's room in Soi Cha Sot 24 in the Bang Na area traces of blood, which a lab identified as that of Somyot Namatsakan, 42, Am’s ex-girlfriend.

Parts of her body were found in two places in Samut Prakan’s Muang district on Thursday.

Am alleged told police he had been seeing Somyot for about two years, but they argued quite often. He then learned that Somyot was going to leave him for a new boyfriend. The woman came to his room on Dec 7 to break up with him.

Driven by jealous anger, Am said he kicked and punched Somyot several times until she dropped to the floor. The man thought she was dead so he cut up her body and disposed of the parts  in different  locations. He then went into hiding, but was arrested on Sunday night.
