Cops face abuse complaint

The relatives of two men who were allegedly beaten by a group of police and forced to confess to murdering a university student, lodged a complaint with the Justice Ministry against the officers yesterday.

President of the Club to Assist Victims of Crimes Achariya Ruangrathana took Chat-anong Chattuchart and Apinya Chaikham to see Pol Col Dusadee Arayawut, deputy permanent secretary for justice.

The pair want justice for their relatives, Watcharin Saengthong and Weerayuth Saehaeng.

Mr Watcharin and Mr Weerayuth were arrested by Thong Lor police during a robbery attempt in Thong Lor district on Feb 8, Mr Achariya said.

The pair were later charged with robbery after they allegedly confessed to the crime, he said. When the suspects were in police custody, officers beat them and forced them to confess to robbing and murdering a Bangkok University student on Jan 10, Mr Achariya said.

Mr Watcharin and Mr Weerayuth denied the allegations about the university student to investigators who questioned them, he said.

Pol Col Chutrakul Yotmadee, Thong Lor police chief, said he has yet to look into the matter.

Ms Chat-anong and Ms Apinya said the suspects had bruises on their body after their detention by police.

Pol Col Dusadee said he would order authorities at the Justice Ministry to investigate the case and question the suspects at Bangkok Remand Prison next week.
