The department said a powerful high pressure zone was moving in from southern China and would reach upper Thailand on Wednesday. Temperatures were expected fall by 3-5 degrees Celsius, with strong winds in the upper North.

It predicted temperatures would stay below 15 degrees Celsius during the day in the North and the Northeast for several days, and overnight frosts in high hilly country.

Meanwhile, the northeastern monsoon in the Gulf of Thailand and the South will be strong and cause heavy rains in the lower South in Nakhon Si Thammarat and farther southern provinces.

The Meteorological Department warned people in the region to be alert for dangers caused by heavy rains. Small boats along the coast of the Gulf of Thailand should remain onshore because waves will be 2-4 metres high and winds fierce in the gulf from Prachuap Khiri Khan province southwards.
