Major drugs haul in Chiang Rai

A large quantity of drugs - 1.2 million methamphetamine pills and 32kg of "ice", or crystal methemphetamine - were found in a car parked in front of Mae Sai Hospital in Chiang Rai province on Wednesday evening.

The seized yaba and crystal meth on display at a press conference in Chiang Rai on Thursday.

The drugs seizure followed information  from hospital staff that a while Honda City car, with a Chiang Rai registration plate, has been left in front of the hospital, about 2km from the Thai-Myanmar border, for about three days.

Soldiers and  police were sent to examine the vehicle and reported finding a cloth bag and five straw bags containing a total of 1.2 million methamphetamine pills and 32kg of crystal meth.

Surveillance camera photos showed a young woman walking near and around the car in a suspicious manner.

Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak Thirasawat, commander of Provincial Police region 5, said further investigation revealed the car belonged to Natyanant Mahatthanasithichok. Police went to her house in tambon Wieng Pang Kham of Mae Sai district and found another car and three motorcycles. All the assets were seized.
  
Police said the suspect fled to Myanmar. They were in contact with Myanmar officials and would request she be sent back to Thailand. The markings on the drug packages showed it was produced under the auspices of Lt Col Yi Se,  the leader of an armed ethnic group in Myanmar.
