King reports 'greatest news'

The greatest news for Bangkok people in 2014 was reports on Their Majesties, a poll has found.

The Bangkok Poll survey found the reports Their Majesties looked healthy and were able to return to their Hua Hin royal residence, as well as the celebrations of His Majesty's 87th birthday and his recovery, the best news of the year, with 70% casting their votes.

Coming at a distant second with 8% was the seizure of the ruling power by the National Council for Peace and Order and having Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha as prime minister so national reform could take place.

Trailing that was the news the protests by both sides of polarised politics ended (6.4%), according to the open-ended poll, conducted by Bangkok University between Dec 12-15 on 1,175 people in the capital and the vicinities.

As for the worst news of the year, Bangkok people voted for the rape of a girl on a train (31.9%), protests and clashes between the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee and the red shirts (18.6%) and other child rape cases (9.8%).

Their most favourite actors and singers this year were Patcharapa "Umm" Chaicheua (19.6%), Thongchai "Bird" McIntyre (12.6%) and Nadej Kukimiya (10.8%).

Among the most outstanding sport teams, Bangkok people voted for the national women's volley ball team (39.7%), the men's football team (38.6) and Thai-styled boxers (4.5%).

The most followed online video clips were those on lost grilled chicken and sticky rice (30%), a nine-year-old girl driving to school (11.4%) and a transvestite criticising a lesbian who kissed her partner on a BTS train (10.3%).

The most followed-up local news was the arrests of the Central Investigation Bureau chief and his network on lese majeste charges (53.1%), the rape of a girl on a train (51.7%) and the murders of two Britons on Koh Tao (43.1%).

The most closely monitored international news was the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 (42.2%), the Ebola-virus spread in Africa (40.4%) and the shoot-down of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 (4.1%).
