Heavy rain expected for flood-hit South

The five southernmost provinces are likely to receive heavy rainfall until Wednesday which could worsen floods in the border region, the southern weather agency says.

People in Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat should brace for rain and stay alert for flash floods and mudslides in some areas, the bureau said yesterday.

One of the worst flooded provinces is Narathiwat where all 13 districts have been declared disaster zones following downpours lasting about a week. The hardest hit district was Sungai Kolok bordering Malaysia.

Mahamapesakree Wamae, chief of the disaster prevention and mitigation office in Narathiwat, said he was concerned that more rainfall would exacerbate the situation in the province.

Manee Uttarak, director of the weather bureau in the province, pointed to Waeng, Sukhirin and Srisakhon districts as high risk areas.
