Koh Kut submarine power cable stalls

A local administration organisation has temporarily halted the laying of a submarine power cable off Koh Kut following complaints from the island's fishermen that their gear is being damaged by the work.

Dechathorn Chan-ob, chairman of the Koh Kut tambon administration organisation (TAO) in Trat’s Koh Kut district, said he ordered a temporary halt to the laying of the submarine power cable from Khlong Yai district on the mainland.

It is to come ashore at an area behind Wat Aosa-lad on Koh Kut.  However, local fishermen have complained that the cable laying operation had caused damage to their fishing gear.

The TAO had earlier informed the Trat provincial electricity authority of the problem after receiving complaints, requesting that the contractor solve the problem. There had been no response, said Mr Dechathorn.

Mr Dechathorn said the submarine power cable would benefit economic growth and the development of Koh Kut.

Businesses on the island, both big and small, all suffered from the inadequate electrity supply, prompting him to allow the laying of the submarine power cable, the TAO chairman said.

‘’A power supply plays a role in the economic development of the island, but the electricity supply for the private sector in inadequate.

"On the other hand, if we let the contractor continue laying the power cable  the livelihoods of local fishermen are being affected. This problem must be tackled before the project can continue,’’ he said.
