Drug user broken out of rehab centre

Two suspected members of a narcotics gang challenged authorities by helping a 21-year-old drug addict escape from a military-run rehabilitation centre in Khon Kaen.

Lt Col Pithakpol Chusri, director of Wiwat Pollamuang rehab centre at the Sri Patcharin military camp in Muang district of Khon Kaen, said Tuesday that two men in their early 20s entered the school in a grey Toyota pickup Monday night. They pretended to visit Nareubet sae Khong, one of addicts sent to undergo treatment at the facility.

After the visiting hours, Mr Nareubet, 21, immediately got in the truck and sped away with his two visitors, Thai media reported today.

Guards tried to stop the truck, but failed as the driver sped away, hitting a metal barrier at the entrance of the camp.  Nobody was injured.

Lt Col Pithakpol said he had assigned his staffer to file a complaint with police to hunt down the two men and the addict.

Mr Nareubet was one of 160 people sent to undergo rehabilitation treatment at the school on Dec 1. Each addict is required to undergo the treatment for 120 days, said the school director.

He had asked the parents of the fleeing addict and they told that their son had not returned home. None of his relatives visited him that day.

The centre's director believed the two men who helped the addict escape might be members of a drug gang.
